Europe's preliminary mediation terms on Ukraine issue unacceptable: Peskov

MOSCOW, June 9 (Xinhua) -- Europe's preliminary terms for mediation on the Ukraine issue are unacceptable, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said Tuesday.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz in London on Sunday to discuss next steps toward peace negotiations.

The parties put forward peace terms, including an immediate and full ceasefire, recognition of the current line of contact as the starting point for negotiations, post-ceasefire security guarantees for Ukraine, the freezing of Russian assets pending the conflict's resolution and the protection of European security interests.

"As for the Europeans' mediation role, they are still far from ready to act as mediators. Launching mediation by imposing preconditions on Russia is illogical, misguided, and, of course, unacceptable to us," Peskov said at a briefing.

Responding to a question regarding U.S. mediation, Peskov said that Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump may hold phone talks as needed. At present, no new call has been arranged between the two sides.

Peskov added that the mediation process for Ukraine is currently on hold, but U.S. mediators are still maintaining contact with Russia and Ukraine via existing channels. The spokesperson noted that no firm date has been set for U.S. mediators to visit Moscow yet, but the Kremlin is happy to welcome them at any time.
