PanARMENIAN.Net - A memorial event dedicated to the 111th anniversary of the Armenian Genocide was held in the Swedish parliament, lawmaker Bjrn Sder said.
Speeches were delivered by Armenia's Ambassador to Sweden Anna Aghajanyan and Swedish-Armenian MP Arin Karapet, Armenpress reported.
"In parliament, we commemorated the anniversary of the Armenian Genocide that took place in the Ottoman Empire in 1915. Around 1.5 million Armenians were killed during the genocide, as well as other Christian minorities of the empire-Assyrians, Syriacs, Chaldeans and Pontic Greeks. Most of them died in 1915-1916, but persecution and killings continued until 1923. The victims made up more than half of the Armenian population of the region, and most survivors fled the country. The Ottoman Empire was largely emptied of its Christian population," the Swedish MP wrote.
On March 11, 2010, the Swedish parliament recognized the Armenian Genocide.
